Kyoto

Fushimi Inari Inn, Higashiyama

We meet at the inn at 3 pm. Before dinner we walk up through the torii of Fushimi Inari, once the day crowds have gone home.

Day 2 to 4

Kumano Kodo

Takijiri Chikatsuyu Hongu Taisha Yunomine

Three days on the Nakahechi, the pilgrim road through the Kii mountains. Stone paths under cedar, a small shrine every hour or so. Your bags go ahead by van.

Takijiri-oji to Chikatsuyu. 13 km, about 6 hours.
Day 3
Hosshinmon-oji to Hongu. 7 km, about 3 hours.
Day 4
Over the Dainichi-goe to Yunomine hot springs.

Day 5

Koyasan

Temple lodging Okunoin

A train and a cable car take us up to the monastery town. You sleep in a temple, eat the monks' vegetarian dinner, and walk Okunoin cemetery under old cedars as the lanterns come on.

Day 6

Nara

Todai-ji Ryokan, Naramachi

An easy last day through Nara Park and the back lanes of Naramachi, past Todai-ji and the old pagodas. The deer bow for crackers. Farewell dinner at a family counter.
